Overview

The San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine (SDHIPM) Institutional Review Board (IRB) was constituted in 1989 when SDHIPM first began to conduct human subject research. Policies and procedures have been implemented to ensure that the IRB complies with the mandated federal research standards. The Board has a strong representation from the community.

The IRB meets monthly to evaluate new studies, supervise ongoing research, and education its members and new researchers.

Mission

San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine (SDHIPM) maintains an independent Institutional Review Board (IRB) to support research and ensure that the vulnerable population of patients near the end of life, as well as their family members, are protected. It is guaranteed that all federally funded human subject research at SDHIPM will be reviewed by the IRB based on the Federalwide Assurance, which has been given to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

The IRB review process is directed by federal rules and regulations and is based on the Protection of Human Subject Code of Federal Regulations (45CFR46) and the Belmont Report. The regulations  require institutions receiving federal funds to have all research involving human participants be approved by the IRB.
