Successful Palliative Care Leadership Development Initiative Welcomes Second Cohort

The International Programs at The Institute for Palliative Medicine (IPM) at San Diego Hospice is pleased to welcome a new cohort of 23 palliative medicine experts from across the globe, and 10 international senior palliative care leaders who will serve as mentors to them. The International Palliative Care Leadership Development Initiative (LDI) begins in San Diego, CA February 5-12, 2012, and this second cohort will utilize the same formula of education, empowerment exercises and expert mentors that proved successful for the inaugural 2010-11 LDI program. Researchers at San Diego Hospice Explore Benefits of Ketamine in Clinical Trials

Interest and news surrounding ketamine is growing, due to its ability to relieve severe depression more quickly than most traditional medications out in the market.  Researchers at San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine have been conducting clinical trials using ketamine for this purpose for several years. Celebrates World Hospice & Palliative Care Day with a Variety of Initiatives

The International Programs at The Institute for Palliative Medicine at San Diego Hospice joins the global hospice and palliative care community in celebrating World Hospice & Palliative Care Day on October 8.  Learn more about their initiatives, and our new Twiter campaign #WeAreHospice, here.

Two of The Institute for Palliative Medicine's leaders, Scott A. Irwin, MD, PhD, and Charles F. von Gunten, MD, PhD, FACP, FAAHPM, will present on delirium during the Friday opening plenary of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization’s 12th Clinical Team Conference and Pediatric Intensive. The Center for Grief Care and Education at  The Institute for Palliative Medicine would like to highlight information about two of their year-around grief and loss support services.

Grief Street and the Newly Bereaved Workshop offer grief support to families after the death of SDHIPM hospice patients as well as providing support to community members who are grieving a death that occurred without the benefit of SDHIPM’s hospice program. Read full release here.

Camp Erin San Diego Wraps Up Fourth Successful Year

This past June, The Center for Grief Care and Education (CGCE) wrapped up its fourth successful year of Camp Erin San Diego, a weekend camp for children ages 6-17 who have been impacted by the loss of a loved one.  Read more here.

The Westreich Foundation Donates $300,000 to The Institute for Palliative Medicine at San Diego Hospice

The Westreich Foundation has donated $300,000 to The Institute for Palliative Medicine at San Diego Hospice to support the further expansion of Its Integrative Palliative Medicine Program, which includes Acupuncture, Hypnotherapy, Reiki and Healing Touch, Aromatherapy, Music Therapy, and Art Therapy. Read full release here.

Scott Irwin, MD, PhD and Director and Founder of IPM's Psychiatry Programs, To Present at the UCSD Stein Institute for Research on Aging Free Public Lecture Series.

Dr. Irwin’s lecture “Healthcare Via Hospice and Palliative Care” will be held Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 5:30 p.m. at the Liebow Auditorium in the UCSD Biomedical Science Building at University of California, San Diego. Dr. Irwin will discuss his work investigating better assessments and treatments for depression and delirium, as well as other mental health issues, to improve outcomes for those with advanced, life-threatening illnesses and their families. Dr. Frank D. Ferris Featured on Prominent Georgian News Program

We are pleased to learn that Dr. Frank D. Ferris’, Director of International Programs at The Institute for Palliative Medicine, recent work in the Republic of Georgia and accolades by the country’s academic and governmental leaders are receiving international attention! A segment in the news program P.S. (Post Scriptum), a prominent Georgian news program that is comparable to the United States-based 60 Minutes, highlighted Dr. Ferris’ bedside trainings with local physicians and his discussions regarding future collaborations in the field of palliative medicine.  Additionally, while in the Republic of Georgia, Dr. Ferris was awarded the Honorary Certificate from the Parliament of Georgia’s Head of Healthcare and Social Issues Committee and Minister of Labor, Health and Social Affairs as well as an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Tbilisi State University.
