Dr. Bruce Arnold is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Calgary and Adjunct Research Scholar at The Institute for Palliative Medicine at San Diego Hospice. He teaches courses in social psychology, mixed-methods, and hospice and palliative care at the University of Calgary. He is particularly interested in applying social science approaches to cognition and mixed methodologies to palliative care. He has published and speaks on communication issues on hospice and palliative care. When not teaching in Calgary he spends about three months at The Institute for Palliative Medicine at San Diego Hospice conducting research into hospice patients’ end-of-life communication of needs and bereaved family members’ experience of complicated grief. He serves as a manuscript reviewer for a number of professional palliative and hospice journals.
Dr. Arnold received the Bachelor of Arts (Anthropology) in 1973 and Masters of Arts (Sociology) from the University of British Columbia in 1984 and his Ph.D. (Sociology) at the University of Toronto in Canada in 1991. He completed the six month Contemplative End-of-Life Professional Certificate Program at Naropa University in Colorado in 2006 and has participated in hospices in Thailand, Taiwan, Canada, and the U.S.A. He joined The Institute for Palliative Medicine at San Diego Hospice in 2009 as an Adjunct Research Scholar.
