David Cameron graduated from the University of Cape Town in 1973 and after working in a rural hospital for a number of years, he specialized in Family Medicine and went into general practiced in Pretoria. In 1987 he became involved in a newly formed hospice and has been their honorary medical director ever since. In 1999 he was elected as a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International for voluntary service to Sungardens Hospice. He has a special interest in the use of sedation in palliative care and has contributed to 3 international textbooks on the palliative care of patients with advanced AIDS
In 1998 he joined the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Pretoria. His academic interests include giving effective feedback to assist medical students to be patient centered in their consultations and to deal effectively with the inherent uncertainty of clinical practice.
In 2005 he was awarded a fellowship by the Foundation for the Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER), in Philadelphia, USA. He is actively involved in developing leadership and in promoting innovation in medical education in Sub-Saharan Africa.
He has published articles on a wide variety of topics related to Family Medicine and Palliative Care.
