Each year The Institute for Palliative Medicine hosts hundreds of students in areas including medicine, nursing, social work, pharmacy, family therapy, chaplaincy, nutrition, psychology and more, from colleges and universities not only in San Diego and California, but from across the United States. These students spend anywhere from a few hours to a few months working with the IPM faculty and learning about the provision of palliative and end of life care as it pertains to their area of study.
Within San Diego County
IPM has agreements with schools across San Diego County and provides classroom training of varying lengths either at IPM or at the school’s campus by IPM faculty members. In addition, IPM provides preceptor clinical experiences for students, partnering them with IPM staff as they provide care at the SDHIPM Inpatient Care Center, in the community working with staff visiting the 1000+ patients we care for every day, and working with clinicians in one of the palliative care consult services we provide at hospitals in the county.
