Gary Buckholz, MD is Director of the Fellowship Program at San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine (SDHIPM), a teaching and research affiliate of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.  The program is sponsored by Scripps Mercy Hospital.  He is also:

  • A member of the Family Medicine Residency Review Committee (ACGME home for Hospice and Palliative Medicine).  In this role he assists ACGME in reviewing Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Programs.
  • A Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
  • Clinical Medical Director at SDHIPM for hospice homecare services in the Northwest part of San Diego County.
  • An Ethics Committee member and consultant at SDHIPM.
  • A reviewer for the Journal of Palliative Medicine and the Lance Armstrong Foundation website.

Dr. Buckholz is originally from Kansas City.  He received his Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from the University of Kansas in 1996.  In 2000 he received his medical degree from the University of Kansas.  He finished his family medicine training at Brown University in 2003.  He then pursued two years of palliative medicine training at SDHIPM.  During his second year of fellowship he focused on education initiatives as the Dr. Suess / Audrey Geisel Palliative Medicine Teaching Fellow.  He is board-certified in Family Medicine as well as Hospice and Palliative Medicine.  He also enjoys participating in international efforts to train physicians and develop palliative care programs.
