Nathan Fairman, MD, MPH
Nathan Fairman, MD, MPH, is a Fellow in Palliative Care Psychiatry at The Institute for Palliative Medicine at San Diego Hospice. In this capacity, he works closely with senior psychiatry faculty at The Institute, providing psychiatric consultation to patients facing life-threatening illnesses, in both acute-care and home-based settings. In addition, he is engaged in The Institute’s didactic curriculum with the Palliative Medicine Fellows, and he is involved in teaching and scholarly activities with other faculty at The Institute.
Dr. Fairman received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Swarthmore College in 1995, where he was a National McCabe Scholar. After working for several years as a seabird biologist in the San Francisco Bay Area, he completed a Medical Degree at UC Davis School of Medicine in 2005. He subsequently obtained a Master of Public Health degree from Harvard University School of Public Health, where he was a Zuckerman Fellow.
Prior to joining The Institute, Dr. Fairman was a resident in General Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at UC Davis School of Medicine in Sacramento, CA. He has professional experience as a contracting psychiatrist in the Sacramento County Drug Court Program and in the Sacramento County Mental Health Treatment Center. Beyond palliative care psychiatry, Dr. Fairman’s clinical interests include psychosomatics, dual-diagnosis, and individual and group psychotherapies. More broadly, Dr. Fairman’s professional interests include bioethics, public health, and medical student and graduate medical education.
As a Fellow, Dr. Fairman receives joint support from the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the Dean’s Office at the UC Davis School of Medicine.
